Discovering Timeless Wisdom

Throughout history, humanity has pursued wisdom. Unlike mere knowledge, wisdom is the application of what one knows. It bridges the gap between knowing what is right and actually doing it. Across the globe, every culture has produced its own wise sayings, commonly known as proverbs. In the Old Testament, King Solomon—renowned for his God-given wisdom—compiled many of these insightful sayings into what we now call the Book of Proverbs.

This ancient yet relevant book is filled with short, practical insights that guide individuals toward wise living. For example, Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger”—a simple yet powerful reminder of how our words carry weight. These teachings are timeless, resonating deeply even in our modern context. that guide individuals toward wise living. Its teachings are timeless, resonating deeply even in our modern context. At the very start of Proverbs, in chapter 1, verses 1 through 7, Solomon outlines the defining traits of a wise person. These foundational characteristics serve as a model for how we might also pursue wisdom in our daily lives—without needing a crown or royal court. This is biblical wisdom for daily life in its purest form.

1. A Wise Person Listens

“The wise hear and increase in learning…” (Proverbs 1:5, ESV). Listening is the first mark of wisdom. And let’s be honest—most of us could use a little help here. In a world full of noise (and podcast episodes we keep meaning to catch up on), truly listening is a lost art. The wise make time to pause and hear, especially when the speaker has walked through some life.

Many of life’s avoidable hardships stem from ignoring wise advice. Think of the times when a mentor, parent, or friend offered sound guidance—only for you to think, “I got this.” Spoiler alert: you didn’t. And that’s okay. Wisdom says, try listening next time.

2. A Wise Person is Always Learning

Proverbs 1:5 also reminds us that the wise continue to increase in learning. Wisdom is not a destination but a journey. A truly wise person recognizes there is always more to learn. They pursue growth in knowledge, understanding, and spiritual discernment.

Ever met someone who thought they knew it all? Yeah, let’s not be that person. The wise are learners at heart—curious, humble, and willing to admit when they don’t know something. Which, let’s face it, is pretty often for most of us. That’s what it means to grow in wisdom according to the Bible.

3. A Wise Person is Teachable

While similar to learning, being teachable is more about our posture. It’s one thing to seek knowledge; it’s another to remain open to correction. Proverbs 1:5 highlights the need for teachability—an often overlooked yet vital trait.

The Apostle Paul modeled this beautifully in Acts 17 when he quoted the proverbs of Athenian poets to connect with his audience. He understood that wisdom can be found even outside expected places. To be teachable means recognizing that God can use many voices and experiences to refine us—sometimes even that coworker who always talks too much at meetings.
